Apple CarPlay

Apple has officially announced its first foray into car technology. The Apple CarPlay is an in-car interface that will be integrated into the new Ferrari, Mercedes Benz, and Volvo automobiles that will be unveiled at the Geneva Auto Show this week.

According to Apple, the software is built “from the ground up” to create a seamless connection between your iPhone and your vehicle. It features your touch and Siri-based navigation for most of your iPhone’s services, including contacts, voicemail, notifications, map directions, and music cueing. It can also support a number of third-party apps, such as Spotify and iHeartRadio.

Voice controls are activated using a button at the steering wheel, while in-car touchscreen interface features familiar iOS 7 icons. The Apple CarPlay will be available as an upgrade to Lightning-enabled devices (iPhone 5 and up), while cars with CarPlay are expected to be released later this years. This includes cars from BMW, Ford, General Motors, Toyota, Hyundai, and Honda among others.
